Interconversion
28th Mar. ~ 24th Apr. 2015

It is said that every organism comes from the sea, which I believe is the reason why creatures in the seas still possess lucid, primitive characters. Though, the life has transformed our looks differently, it raises a question of what we, who shares the same beginning, really need from one another. We were born with the others and the nature surrounding us, and there is an unseen order that allows us to enjoy and use our surroundings freely. It is fair to say there is not a thing that is not interconnected with the others. So, if we wanted to share what we have experienced with the others and the nature we ought to give back whatever we have been given and moreover never forget, regardless its shape or form, the gratitude shown. Now we meet the idea of artist Miwon about the interconversion. Now we meet the idea of artist Miwon about the interconversion.

Miwon’s talk: In my recollection of those days back in school, I often recall this word that my teacher once taught me about. He said, in his perspective, we would learn a way of life just by looking at this word. For an English speaker, this particular word would be ‘human’, or, and for a Korean speaker, it is ìÑ (pronounced Inn)—A Korean-Chinese character that defines human. The imagery of H, first letter of Human, shows two people walking with their hands held together, whereas ìÑ shows two people leaning against one another. He asked us to choose whether it was human or ìÑ that represent how I think of relationship, of people, in general. I remember that only me and a boy chose “human”. Surprisingly, the teacher pointed out instead of walking equally with hands in hands relying on others was by far a better life, that it was cold-hearted for us to choose the otherwise. I would never forget that. The two options were both equally righteous and morale, yet it seemed though as if he and I have made a bad decision like we have committed a foul play. And to this day, I still think the same. Once it occurred to me that we do rely on ourselves and many other things around us, so am I providing enough opportunities for my surroundings to rely on me just as much as they did on me?

Regardless what the relationship may be one-sided force or reception will not allow the relationship to exist. It will only sustain when interconversion carries out by both parties. Then, what about our relationship with place where we live? What can we say about natural, free relationship with earth? With this question in my mind, just like many others did, I have had the time to think about myself. What is given must be returned, perpetual interchange of two parties.
